How does the LANAP procedure work?
The LANAP procedure begins with the use of lasers to target and remove diseased tissue in the gums. The laser also sterilizes the area, minimizing the risk of infection. This precision allows for more conservative removal of infected tissue, preserving healthy gum tissue and reducing the need for sutures or stitches.
What are the steps involved in the LANAP protocol?
- Consultation visit. First, patients consult with Dr. Alicia Gittleman to discuss their oral health concerns and determine whether they are good candidates for the LANAP laser periodontal therapy protocol.
- Full-mouth digital dental X-rays. Patients deemed suitable for LANAP will receive full-mouth digital X-rays to provide a detailed view of their teeth and supporting structures.
- Pocket depth measurement. During this step, Dr. Alicia Gittleman uses a small probe to measure the depth of the spaces (or pockets) between the gums and teeth.
- Bacteria and calculus removal. The next part of the LANAP protocol involves removing all bacteria, plaque, and tartar from around the teeth through ultrasonic scaling or traditional hand-scaling techniques.
- Laser treatment. After the teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, Dr. Alicia Gittleman will use a special laser to target and eliminate any remaining bacteria without damaging healthy tissue.
- Reattachment of gum tissue. Once the bacteria has been removed, the laser is used to stimulate the regrowth of gum tissue around the teeth. This helps to reattach the gums to the root surface, creating a tight seal that prevents further bacterial infiltration.
- Bite adjustment. The LANAP protocol also includes bite adjustment, which involves reshaping or adjusting certain areas of the tooth structure to ensure proper alignment and distribution of pressure when biting down.
- Periodontal maintenance. After completing the LANAP procedure, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and continue regular visits to the dentist for periodontal maintenance. This involves removing plaque and tartar buildup, checking for any signs of infection or inflammation, and ensuring the gums are healing properly.
